EXPLORING JOGYESA TEMPLE HISTORY AND ITS ARCHITECTURE AT NIGHT IN KOREA

I was opportune to visit and explore the Jogyesa temple at night When I was in Korea. This place is very beautiful and serene.The Jogyesa temple is located at Jogyesa, 55 Ujeongguk-ro, Gyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu. It is the Buddhist temple right in the middle of Seoul.

Daeungjeon means “Hall of the Great Hero”

The Jogyesa Temple is recognized as the main temple of the Jogye Order and symbol of Korean Buddhism. It founding date has been traced to 1910 as a result of the support of the entire Buddhist community. History shows that the completion ceremony for the Daeungjeon was held on October 25, 1938. The temple is so beautiful it has a mixture of traditional and palace architecture.

During my visit to the temple, there are some places I recognized and read that it was important, these are the chanting place area namely Daeungjeon, the Geunknakjeon, the Beomjongnu, the Ijumun and The Story Buddha Relic Stupa.

Chanting Place.

1. Daeungjeon

Daeungjeon means “Hall of the Great Hero” The great hero is Shakyamuni Buddha and his statue is the central figure in this hall.

2. Geunknakjeon

Geungnakjeon is also know as Paradise Hall, It is for Amitabha (or Amitayus) Buddha who leads beings to Paradise (Western Pure Land) where he resides.

3. Beomjongnu

The Beomjongnu is also called the the Bell Pavilion is where the four temple instruments are kept. These are played before the morning and evening chanting.

4. Ijumun

ljumun or one pillar gate

ljumun or one pillar gate which I passed through to enter the temple is One Pillar Gate and it is the first entrance to the Buddha’s world. It has a single lateral pillar, thus the name One Pillar Gate. This is symbolic of one mind.

5. Ten Storied Buddha Relic Stupa.

It is Housed in the octagonal ten-storied stupa is an actual relic of the Buddha brought in 1913 by the Sri Lankan monk Anagarika Dharmapala (1864~1933).
