Understanding KOICA’S Core Initiatives (ODA) & some activities in Nigeria.

KOICA is the Korea International Cooperation Agency. It is Korea’s leading government-funded development cooperation Agency that provides grant aid and implements development Projects. It was established in 1991 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea as a governmental organization for Official Development Assistance (ODA).

KOICA has several goals, but a major one is to enhance the effectiveness of Korea’s grant aid programs. KOICA also has several Core Values, which are called the 5 Ps: People, Peace, Prosperity, Planet, and Partnership.

Most importantly, the KOICA mission is to contribute to the common prosperity and the promotion of world peace through Inclusive Mutual Development Cooperation whilst leaving no one behind.

KOICA’s Core initiatives are:

  • Human Resource Development
  • Economic Infrastructure
  • Environmental Protection
    And Climate Change
  • Health and Medical Cooperation
  • Agriculture and Rural Development .

Additionally, KOICA ODA has a mission to promote sustainable development Goals and strengthening partnerships with developing countries around the world

Do you Know that KOICA is present in Nigeria?

KOICA’s is actively involved in Nigeria carrying out Several ODA activities. It is known to provide grant aid programs in Nigeria. The KOICA Nigerian office opened in 2008 and has since then focused on sectors such as e-government, education, healthcare, agriculture, and more. KOICA Nigeria is the Official Development Assistance (ODA) and International Development Cooperation Agency of the Republic of Korea’s government agency which is responsible for implementing grant aid and technical cooperation programs in Nigeria. The KOICA NIgerian office is located at 12, Charles De-Gaulle CI, Asokoro, Abuja

A key ODA initiatives andactivities in Nigeria focuses on digital transformation An example is Smart Education Project It major 4-year project From (2021-2025) in partnership with UBEC equipping schools in six states, training 1000 teachers.

Also there is Digital Governance Projects where KOICA has signed a $13 million aid grant 2nd phase digital governance project with Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy of Nigeria. The project is titled “ Project for Building Foundation Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria”, and will be implemented over a period of 6 years.

KOICA also engages in several other activities such as Capacity Building and Human Capital Development, scholarships humanitarian activities like donating rice millers. To mention a few.
