Jin released his first independent song “Tonight” on June 4, 2019, as part of BTS’ sixth anniversary celebrations. jin and Big Hit record producers Slow Rabbit and Hiss Noise wrote the acoustic ballad. The lyrics of the song, written by Jin and RM, are inspired by Jin’s relationship with his pets. The song received generally positive feedback, with praise for Kim’s vocals and the song’s calming atmosphere.

Jin’s second solo song, “Abyss” was released on December 3, 2020. Jinco-wrote and co-composed the acoustic ballad with RM and record producers Bumzu and Pdogg, inspired by his feelings of anxiety, doubt, and burnout. In a post on the official BTS blog, Jin discussed his musical insecurities and how those darker emotions drove him to write the song.

Jin sang the main theme for the TvN drama series Jirisan in October 2021. The single, titled “Yours” was accompanied by a music video featuring footage from the show. Jin celebrated his 29th birthday by releasing the short song “Super Tuna” as a gift to fans on December 4. It quickly went viral after an accompanying performance video was posted the same day on the BTS YouTube channel. For eight consecutive days, the video ranked first on YouTube’s World Popular Music Video and trended in countries such as Korea, Peru, and Singapore. On TikTok, a subsequent dance challenge arose, with videos featuring the sound receiving over 141.8 million cumulative views in 10 days.

Journalist Choi Song-hye of Aju News noted that BTS singles like “Spring Day” and “Fake Love” demonstrated Jin’s vocal stability, while the B-side “Jamais Vu” demonstrated his emotional range. Hong Hye-min of The Korea Times described jin’s voice as “tender, sorrowful, andfree-spirited” and considered it to be the “standout element” on the solo ballad “Epiphany”. When discussing “Epiphany” critic Park Hee-a stated that jin “sings the most sentimental emotions” of the solo tracks on Love Yourself: Answer (2018). Park stated in a review of “Fake Love” that jin’s belting proved the song’s effectiveness.
