The King Sejong Institute Korean Writing Contest is an annual competition that encourages learners of Korean language to showcase their writing skills. The contest is open to learners of all levels, from beginners to advanced. It’s a great opportunity for Korean language enthusiasts to demonstrate their skills and connect with others who share their passion.
I had the opportunity to interview the winner of the 2024 King Sejong Institute writing contest in Nigeria, she shares her wins and process of learning to write Hangeul.

My name is Joy Eloghene Ossai
Why did you enter the Korean writing contest
Ans: I entered the contest simply because I would participate in anything that concerns Korean language if was eligible, I am very passionate about Korean language, also the contest was great opportunity to test my Korean language ability, I’m thankful for the opportunity.

What interest you To learning how to write in Korean
The language as a whole is what got me hooked, I remember the first time I came across the language through the popular Korean drama “boys before flowers”, I was enchanted, I’ve never wanted to speak any other foreign language as much as I wanted Korean, then I started learning it, and gradually I’ve gotten to the point now where I can speak and write quite proficiently.
Describe your process in learning to write Hangeul
It was easy and fun, maybe because I had a great deal of passion for the language, I thought “hangeul” which is Korean language characters for writing was quite cute and simple, it’s so simple it could be learnt in 30minutes, but I guess that’s just my opinion.
What was the contest like and what was your winning written work
Ans: The Contest was quite interesting, I did my best to prepare for it and I’m grateful to have won the first prize for writing and second prize for speech.
What was your reaction to being named the winner of the writing contest
Ans: I was anxious prior to the announcement, I was hoping and praying to God that I win because I really wanted the First Prize Winner certificate, let’s just say I’m hunting certificates and accolades as regards Korean Language and Korean Culture for a greater purpose and dream regarding South Korea.
What does being the winner of the writing contest mean to you
Ans: It means a whole lot to me, I’m not gonna lie I’m so thankful for these opportunities, I thank God for my journey so far and I’m immensely grateful to the Korean Cultural Center of Nigeria, I’m grateful to everyone who has supported my Korean Language journey. God bless you all.
